Ugh! What can I say? I shoot a Canon 7D MK 1 and have been using a Sigma 18-35mm ART lens with extension tubes for my close up/macro work. I bought this so I could avoid using the tubes due to the light loss. For the price it isnt a horrible lens, but there is noticeable grain even at ISO 100 and really good light. Nothing I cant fix in post processing, but now I traded time messing with extension tubes for more post-processing... I included several shots that have been edited in Lightroom. Nothing too crazy

Amazing lens for a Macro. Very impressive with the detail and clarity. Would be great for portrait photos also. Highly recommend this lens, to see the detail on the close up photos of the subject is more than I expected out of this lens. This Tokina is now one of my top two lenses and will not leave my bag of rotating lenses. The only tough thing about this lens is there is no VR so you need steady hands or some type of stabilization. A tripod is perfect but some practice will get you to where you need with it.

Excellent sharpness wide open. I expected to try it and return it because I was skeptical but this lens is solid all the way. On my 6D, it doesnt focus as fast as the Canon lenses but a small price to pay for this level of sharpness.

ive had it for a few moments and taken a few quick shots. in the short time ive had it the performance is great. 4 stars because my particular unit came with a manufacturing defect on one of the blades. i dont know how or if it will effect the lens now or in the future. for the price and the warranty that it came with i feel ok with keeping it. pics attached... the hassle of returning and exchanging it was something i did not want to go through... amazon was very helpful in figuring out a situation that was amicable to myself. !!!!!!!!!!make sure you look on kenkos website to see if an amazon seller is an authorized distributor or you will not get a warranty. as of today 17th st photo is an authorized seller

This is an overrated lens. Its a sharp lens, but do not trust the autofocus at macro distances. It will hunt continuously without finding focus. This is on a D750. Aperture blades not rounded, so bokeh balls (especially lights / reflections) wont be as round as you think it would. Lens DOES extend at the end, which is a nusance for photographing very close objects. Pony up for the better versions with rounded aperture blades and a non-extending design.

I got this lens to go along with my Canon Rebel T4i. Im very new to this level of photography and there is some of a learning curve for me. Im still learning and slowly getting better. Until this morning I didnt have anything to really show off this lens. Now I do. In the right settings, this lens will astound you. Get it. If its less than $500. Get it. This lens does have manual focus AND auto focus. To engage auto focus pull the focus ring away from you.

Third-party lenses have, for me, always suffered from being a step behind their big name counterparts. I bought this lens because I did not have $1,000 for the Nikkor 105mmm model I wanted but could not afford. I put this lens though its paces on my Nikon D7000, shooting everything from flowers to bugs to portraits. Whether on a tripod, stopped down or wide open and hand held, the images were just, well, meh. Im willing to admit that I may have received a bad copy. I wanted to like it enough to keep it, but truly, it didnt take much better images than the Canon 500D close-up lens I use with my 55-300 Nikkor lens, so it went back. My advice for serious macro/close-up shooters: save up for the best lens you can get. Remember, you can rent before you buy in most cases, so you can find out in advance if a lens is a good fit for you, your camera, and your style of shooting. This one, while well made and with decent glass, just wasnt quite there for me.

Before I write my review I want to let you know that I am not a Pro photographer and I am new to this. I found it a little challenging the first couple of hours since it’s a manual lens but after I figured out how it worked, I was able to take some really good shots! The lens is very nice and well made and the quality of the pictures is amazing. The only thing I didn’t like it’s the fact that it focuses on a small area only and it blurs part of the area you’re trying to shoot when getting macro pics, but maybe that could be me that I am not an experienced photographer and am not doing the right settings!

Ive been using in now for over a year. Im just now getting around to writing a review. Im really liking this lens. I wont write a novel here and get into the weeds repeating all of the specs you can find on the product website. I WILL say that its sharp for what I need easy to operate and has a really good feel to it. I noticed that on my D7100 body, the exposure seems to be spot on at 0 EV and of course does well in low light conditions. One other thing Id REALLY like to point out...I noticed some negative feedback regarding the lenses push/pull clutch being noisy for macro shooting. From a realistic standpoint, its not THAT loud that youre going to spook your subject and in all actuality a way around it is simply to make a decision before you get up close. In most macro shooting, were more prone to manual focus anyway, so adjust the clutch to manual beforehand and voila! Problem solved.

As has been mentioned, this is a lense where not much user information is available, but when you do find information, then it is all extremely positive. Thanks to all the reviewers here and Ken Rockwell.com for your reviews and personal experience in using this lense. I am new to dslr and macro photography, so please excuse this basic review and any technical errors. Basically, this lense does live up to its expectations. If you are a D5000 owner, then yes, this lense will mount. It clicks in nice and solidly. No, there is no autofocus with the D5000, and to engage the clutch for manual focus is very simple. Just pull back until you hear a click. In this mode, the focus/zoom ring is engaged and you can zoom in and out. To put it back onto AF, grasp the zoom ring and push forward until you hear another click. On the barrel is two little indicators - AF and MF. If AF is engaged, then you can twist the focus ring until the cows come home, it wont affect your shots. This is my first macro lense and first time using MF to this extent. It is lovely to use. i will post pics later on. I have experimented with macro, portrait and a long distance shot of an aircraft landing and have been impressed with the quality of the pictures. If it is a bad pic...then it is me :) I have used this lense with a SB600 and i am pleased with all the results so far. The lense itself feels solid and sturdy. I have big hands, so holding the camera body and lense dont give me any issues, the camera feels balanced and easier to hold. I am comparing this to my Sigma 18-250mm. The irony is that the SB600 is almost as big as the body or lense :) Do I recommend this lense? With what experience I have in using this lense, I would definitely recommend it, especially in terms of cost and quality, in other words, for the price you pay, you get a far greater return in a quality product.
